Week 17, Question 3: More Focus on Organizational Communication

The one concept that I feel needs further discussion is the Organizational Communication. There are so many corporations and organizations out there that us students are going to be involved with such as school and work. Therefore with organizations being so prevalent in our lives, it is important to focus on better understand its function and its communication methods. With better understanding organizations, we can be prepared when going into interviews or approaching our supervisors to solve a conflict. During that week's discussion, we talked about how the organizations is dependent and connected to its environment. But I feel we should also be talking about how we are dependent on them as well as how to effectively communicate with them to get what we need. After all, organizations are a big part of our lives.

Understand how to better manage organizational communication will help all of us students to get achieve higher positions in the organizations we are a part of. For an example, I could use what I learned about the information flow to my advantage my getting my publishing my work for my job. I could also use this concept to take advantage of the informal structures to learn more about the company and to get recognized by the company. This concept is really useful to me in terms of better understanding my organizations. Therefore, more focus should be on this concept of organizational communication.

  1. HI events dreamer. I see that you are interested in organizational communications. Have you taken the Comm144 class at SJSU. Its the organizational communications class. I had to take it because it is needed for my major, but it was extreamly interesting and really opened up my eyes to how organizations work. If you really are interested in this topic then I suggest you take it. But on second though, I see you are graduating in May, so scratch that idea. But I understand what you are saying about covering the topic more in class. As a graduating senior as well, it would be helpful when we leave school and enter the job world.

good post and good luck in life!

  2. Organizational communications is important and it most definitely ties with our daily lives. Probbaly 90% of students have work and school as well as other extra curricular activites that are part of our lives. It does makes a smoother transfer from college to the work field. Many students go into the job world somewhat naiive and may be in shock because they don't know what to expect. With the help of focusing on this topic more I will agree that it will benefit us for the oh so great job world :)

  3. I agree that organization communication is important in everyday life. I think that some people take organizational communication for granted. I took the class with Varona and all the concepts seemed repetetive. What I mean is I felt like I wasnt really learning something new. But if you really think about, applying concepts set up by scholars and theorist regarding organizational communication really helps us become more in tune with how an organization should be run. It is definately something we can use in our workplace or even at school.
